Iron air battery energy density
WebJul 28, 2024 · Iron-air battery technology holds the promise of becoming the lowest cost energy storage – less than one-tenth of that of lithium-ion. The technology being advanced by the Massachusetts-based startup Form Energy in essence involves the rusting and de-rusting of iron to deliver energy storage in the multi-day range up to about 100 hours. WebCurrent estimates indicate that iron-air batteries could cost around $20 per kWh of capacity, compared to up to $200 per kWh in the case of Li-Ion batteries. Iron-air battery characteristics make it unsuitable for electric vehicles because iron is heavier than lithium. Also, they have a slow charge and recharge cycle, so forget fast charging.
